Rapoport mentioned a number of teams that may come into play for Griffin. He stated that the San Francisco 49ers could be an option if the team loses Colin Kaepernick. The other teams that Rapoport mentioned included the Kansas City Chiefs, who may lose backup quarterback Chase Daniel, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, and the Dallas Cowboys.
On Monday, Rapoport said on the show that Kaepernick would be open to playing in San Francisco during the 2016 season. "I'm told he certainly is more than open to returning to San Francisco," said Rapoport. "Also, he's set to make $12 million. Might make more in San Francisco than anywhere else."
Kaepernick will be guaranteed his base salary of $11.9 million if he is on the roster on April 1. After bonuses, Kaepernick will count about $15.9 million against the 49ers' cap in 2016. Of course, the 49ers will have around $55 million in salary cap space so if Kaepernick wants to be in San Francisco and the 49ers want him there, money should not be a factor.
It was reported on Sunday that Kaepernick's representatives would meet with the 49ers at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. The meeting could be to gauge each other's interests and commitment.
As for Griffin, he did not play a snap during the 2015 season. He lost his starting job to Kirk Cousins. Since being drafted with the second overall selection in 2012, Griffin has posted 8,097 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 1,480 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns, and a 91.0 passer rating.
The real question is what the asking price for Griffin might be. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke loves his draft picks so if other teams show a good deal of interest, it is very unlikely that San Francisco gets involved in a bidding war. Griffin is due over $16 million this season.
The teams named by Rapoport are also likely based on educated speculation gIvan what he is hearing around the league and each team's situation.
