Davis, who is 26, retired after dealing with a number of injuries during the 2014 season, including a concussion. He stated that he wanted to get healthy before returning to the NFL. His injuries limited him to only seven games in 2014. Davis, who is very vocal on Twitter, has repeatedly confirmed that he planned to return to the 49ers, who continue to hold his rights.
His absence left the 49ers with free agent acquisition Erik Pears starting at right tackle, contributing to making the offensive line one of the worst in the NFL. Davis was the 11th overall selection out of Rutgers by the 49ers in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has played his entire career with the 49ers and started every game prior to 2014.
