Were reports of the Kansas City Chiefs being out of the hunt for CB Sean Smith a bit premature? Terez Paylor, a team beat writer for the Kansas City Star, believes so. He is hearing that the Chiefs are making a strong push to retain Smith, who is an unrestricted free agent.

Earlier today, 95.7 The Game's John Middlekauff, reported that the Chiefs might be out of the race and that it was likely a two-team battle between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.

On Monday, it was reported by Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area that the 49ers had discussions about bringing Smith to San Francisco. Cornerback is one of the many positions of need for the 49ers.

Smith, a 2009 draft selection out of Utah by the Miami Dolphins, has had 353 tackles, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, 81 passes deflected, and a defensive touchdown over his career.
