On Monday, it was reported by Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area that the 49ers had discussions about bringing Smith to San Francisco. Cornerback is one of the many positions of need for the 49ers. The 49ers and Smith's former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, were also in pursuit of Smith.
Smith, a 2009 draft selection out of Utah by the Miami Dolphins, has had 353 tackles, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, 81 passes deflected, and a defensive touchdown over his career.
In March of 2013, Smith signed a three-year, $18 million deal with $12 million guaranteed to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was suspended for the first three games of the 2015 season after pleading guilty to a DUI charge last April.
Pure cornerbacks currently on the 49ers' roster include Kenneth Acker, Tramaine Brock, Marcus Cromartie, Chris Davis, Dontae Johnson, and Keith Reaser.
