As Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee was quick to point out, it certainly does not hurt that the Rams' first opponent of the 2016 season are the 49ers at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
The 49ers signed Thompson on May 5, 2015 as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina. In September, he was released to allow the team to get their roster down to the required 53 players. He was signed to the team's practice squad the following day and then activated to be Gabbert's backup in November. Thompson was among the players released on May 6 following the signing of 21 rookies.

The 49ers currently have four quarterbacks on the roster. They are Gabbert, Kaepernick, Thad Lewis, and Jeff Driskel.
