Colin Kaepernick

As usual, the big story remains the status of Colin Kaepernick. Head coach Chip Kelly announced today that the quarterback would miss his second straight preseason game and will not play against the Broncos. The team hopes to ease him back into practice and get him ready to play against the Green Bay Packers at home next week.

Kaepernick did do some light throwing on a side field during today's practice. Again, he did not participate in any team drills (7-on-7 or 11-on-11) and has not done so since Wednesday, August 10. That was eight days ago.

Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group noted that Kaepernick ended up throwing 47 passes on the side and that he did not appear to show any discomfort.

Injuries

Aside from Kaepernick, WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) did not practice. OLB Aaron Lynch also did not practice. He was poked in the eye during Wednesday's practice.

Quarterbacks

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee logged Blaine Gabbert as 5 of 9 passing during practice. He said that Gabbert had some nice throws in the red zone. It was a better day of practice for the 49ers than yesterday according to Cam Inman.

Offensive line

OT Anthony Davis got some work with the first-team offensive line. However, it was his debut at right guard and not right tackle where he has been practicing all of training camp. While working with the second-team offensive line, he returned to right tackle.

Wide receivers

Torrey Smith beat CB Aqib Talib twice in a row for medium gains during 7-on-7 drills, per Joe Fann of 49ers Media. "Made one leaping catch near the sideline through a hold," said Fann.

Miscellaneous

For the second day in a row, things got a bit heated between the 49ers and the Broncos. A few fights broke out at practice today. One was OG Zane Beadles against DE Adam Gotsis. Another had C James Ferentz punching NT Garrison Smith.
