Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that, according to multiple sources, the Philadelphia Eagles are a team that is in discussions with the 49ers to acquire Smith. "No deal is imminent, but the Eagles potentially acquiring Smith makes sense," writes Florio. "He's been disappointing while playing on bad offenses in two seasons with the 49ers, and the Eagles would love to bolster their receiving corps for a run at the NFC East title."
Smith entered the season as the 49ers' number one receiver but has struggled through seven games. Jeremy Kerley actually leads the team in receiving with 30 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has 13 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith was the 49ers' biggest free agent acquisition of the 2015 offseason and was signed to a five-year, $40 million contract with the team. Then 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin helped recruit Smith, who joined San Francisco to pair up with his former Baltimore Ravens teammate. Boldin was not re-signed by the team following the 2015 season and signed with the Detroit Lions this past offseason.
Smith's best game of this season came against the Buffalo Bills during Week 6 when he had three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. Coincidentally, that was QB Colin Kaepernick's first game as a starting quarterback since November 1, 2015.
This latest report about Smith comes a day after Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that multiple teams might be interested in 49ers OT Joe Staley. Today, head coach Chip Kelly indicated that scenario would be disappointing. "That's news to me," Kelly said. "No one has ever had any discussions with me about Joe being traded. We need Joe here."
"I'm not in charge of the overall roster," Kelly added.
