The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that safety Terrell Williams Jr. has been placed on injured reserve. To fill his roster spot, the team re-signed safety Dexter McCoil to a one-year deal.
Williams appeared to injure his knee during Thursday's joint practice with the Houston Texans. He hit the concrete along the side of the practice field after going down at the end of a play during one-on-one coverage drills. The injury was severe enough that Williams had to be carted off the field.
"He's walking and said he is fine," Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported after the practice session.
Update: Williams suffered hyperextended knee that resulted in a significant bone bruise and posterior capsule tear, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. The injury will not require surgery but will take time to heal.
"With [Williams] going down, some of our issues we have, we might have to look to bring someone else in," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after Thursday's practice.
Williams was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Houston on April 30, 2018, and played well in the 49ers' exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
The 49ers initially claimed McCoil off of waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers on October 9, 2017. He appeared in eight games for San Francisco and registered a tackle. The 49ers waived McCoil on April 30.
