The San Francisco 49ers appear close to signing 28-year-old veteran quarterback Tom Savage, according to a report from ESPN's Jordan Schultz:
#49ers are very likely signing QB Tom Savage, per league source. Savage, 28, played for the #Texans from 2014-17, before a brief stint with the #Saints. Savage already had a physical with SF, and will now have another one with the team, albeit a less extensive one. https://t.co/AB7Hd2BkP3

Per the report, which went live shortly before the Niners' Week 6 matchup on Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers, the 49ers have already conducted a physical with Savage and are expected to do so again shortly.
Currently, San Francisco's only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster are C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens, who was promoted to the active roster after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending ACL injury back in Week 3. Signing Savage likely means Mullens gets waived and could revert back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
Savage was signed as a fourth-round NFL Draft pick by the Houston Texans back in 2014. He has a 57.5 career completion percentage with five touchdowns thrown (all in 2017) against seven interceptions. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints but didn't make the 53-man roster and was released.
