Running backs Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith each rushed for 500 or more yards in a season for 13 straight years – an NFL record until this past weekend.

Former San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts running back, Frank Gore, now with the Miami Dolphins, has accomplished the same feat for 14 consecutive seasons. The record dates back to his 2005 rookie season with the 49ers.

Gore moved past Payton and Smith during the Dolphins' 31-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The veteran running back averaged an impressive 6.9 yards per carry, his highest average of the season, on his way to 90 rushing yards against the Packers and 528 rushing yards for the season.

Gore currently ranks No. 4 all-time with 14,554 career rushing yards. He is just 715 yards shy of the No. 3 spot owned by Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders. Gore has already surpassed Sanders among the all-time yards from scrimmage leaders list. Gore sits at the No. 6 spot with 18,306 yards, which is just 150 yards shy of LaDainian Tomlinson at the No. 5 spot with 18,456 yards.

Gore spent his first 10 seasons with the 49ers and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection (2006, 2009, 2011–2013) during his time in San Francisco. He rushed for a franchise record 11,073 yards with the 49ers. No Niners running back in franchise history had more 1,000-yard rushing seasons than Gore's eight.
