San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin is going through a tough personal situation right now. The details of that situation remain a mystery, but it caused the receiver to miss this past Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the team's two practices this week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Friday morning and shared that he doesn't expect Goodwin to play on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. That likely means he will remain excused for the 49ers' Friday practice, the team's third and last of the week.

"I don't expect him to (play on Sunday)," Shanahan said on the "Murph & Mac" show. "I'd be very surprised if he did."

He didn't want to shed any more light on what Goodwin is going through.

"He's going through some tough personal family issues," Shanahan said. "That will be up to 'Quise when he wants to share that stuff. He came into the building yesterday, and I got to spend a lot of time with him just talking one-on-one. He's struggling and going through some real-life issues that anybody would struggle with. Everyone deals with those differently.

"I know 'Quise is trying to work his way through some stuff. It's better that he isn't here because he isn't in a great spot and I can totally understand why. We're going to be here for him, and I hope he can get through this, and at his own pace. When he comes back in here, we'll be ready for him, but I'm definitely going to wait for him to mention that and I'm sure he'll be getting closer to doing that."

Shanahan went on to say it is more important that Goodwin gets through his situation than be with the team right now.

The 49ers will also likely be without their other starting wide receiver, Pierre Garçon, who has been dealing with a knee injury since a Week 5 contest against the Arizona Cardinals.

"I'd be surprised if he was out there," Shanahan said. "P's going through the same stuff, and I really think he will all year. We've been down a number of receivers so I'd like to keep Pierre. We're not [playing him on injured reserve] now just because we're down to four receivers right now with Marquise not being here and Pierre not ready to go. We usually always dress five.

"We're pretty short-handed, so we're keeping P. He'll play for us if need be. He'll be ready on Sunday, but it's something we're not trying to put him through unless he needs to go through because he is hurting. He's been hurting pretty much all year, especially since really about that Green Bay game.

"We'll see with Pierre. I'd be surprised if he goes this week but the exciting thing about this week, even though it's not great under the circumstances with Marquise and what I just said about Pierre, but with (Dante) Pettis, Richie James, and (Kendrick) Bourne, with Trent Taylor backing them up, this will be the first time this year that we've had two games in a row where we have the same guys playing the same positions at receiver."
