Urban Meyer Is retiring as Ohio State's head coach following the Rose Bowl and offensive coordinator Ryan Day will replace him on January 2. Meyer has been the Buckeye's head coach for the past seven seasons.
Meyer, 54, has been battling the effects of an arachnoid cyst on his brain, which was diagnosed in 1998 but has worsened in recent years.
If Day's name sounds familiar to Niner fans, it's because he served as the 49ers quarterbacks coach on Chip Kelly's staff in 2017. He served the same role with Kelly in Philadelphia in 2016.
After San Francisco fired Kelly and his staff, Day joined the Buckeyes as the program's quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator following the departure of Tim Beck.
Kelly is currently the head coach at UCLA.
Day served as Ohio State's interim head coach for the first three games of the season after Meyer was suspended for mishandling the employment of former assistant coach Zach Smith. He went 3-0 in those games.
