Hitner is just the latest player brought in this week following Sunday's injury to starting tackle Joe Staley, who will miss six to eight weeks with a broken fibula. The Rams signed Hitner as an undrafted free agent out of Villanova this offseason and waived him on August 30.
San Francisco also worked out offensive linemen Marcus Applefield, Will Holden, Jaryd Jones-Smith, and Kyle Murphy this week. Holden was signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.
The 49ers hosted veteran tackle Sam Young this week for a visit. San Francisco initially signed him on August 12 after the loss of swing tackle Shon Coleman (ankle, fibula) for the season. The 49ers waived Young during their 53-player roster cut-down in August.
