San Francisco 49ers players hugged, celebrated, and then head coach Kyle Shanahan held up one of the team's NFC West Champions t-shirts after Sunday night's win against the Seattle Seahawks. No, he didn't do it to boost merchandise sales. He did it to make a statement.
The division-championship shirt reads, "The West is not Enough" — the mindset with which Shanahan wants his players to have going forward.
The 49ers won the NFC West and earned home-field advantage in their conference, but those were never the ultimate goals. San Francisco seeks to end its special season hoisting the team's sixth Lombardi trophy.
"It feels good to have these (shirts), but this shirt says it the best to me here, man," Shanahan told his players. "The West is awesome, alright? But the West isn't enough."
"Hey, fellas, it feels good," cornerback Richard Sherman said, following Shanahan. "It feels good to say 'champions' on the hat, but this ain't enough, like they said. So get your bodies right. We got more to do."
