The San Francisco 49ers have signed former New York Jets offensive lineman Tom Compton to a one-year deal, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that the deal is valued at $3 million.

Compton, 30, becomes the first outside free agent who has agreed to terms with the 49ers since the start of the new league year on Wednesday. He has spent three seasons with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Two with the Washington Redskins (2012-13) when the coach was the offensive coordinator there, and another (2016) with the Atlanta Falcons before Shanahan joined the 49ers.

The news comes minutes after Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the 49ers informed guard Mike Person that he is being released.

Washington made Compton a sixth-round selection out of South Dakota in 2012. He has 99 game appearances and 34 starts through his eight NFL seasons. The offensive lineman also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears during his professional career.

Compton started five games with the Jets this past season before landing on injured reserve on December 28, 2019. He had a career-high 14 starts at left guard with the Vikings in 2018, missing two games with a knee injury.
