The San Francisco 49ers lost swing tackle Shon Coleman to injury last preseason and will be without him again this year. The offensive lineman became the second Niners player to exercise the option to opt-out of the 2020 season as the NFL prepares to play amid a pandemic.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported the news. The deadline to opt-out of the upcoming season was today at 1 p.m. PT.
One more before the deadline: #49ers OL Shon Coleman opted out of the 2020 season, per source.
Coleman joins wide receiver Travis Benjamin, who on Tuesday announced his decision to opt-out of the upcoming season due to concerns over his health and that of his family.
San Francisco in March re-signed Coleman to a one-year deal before he hit free agency.
Coleman, 28, landed on injured reserve in August after suffering a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle during the 49ers' preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cleveland Browns made Coleman a third-round selection out of Auburn in 2016. He has 23 game appearances and 16 starts through his three NFL seasons.
San Francisco initially acquired Coleman by trading a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft to Cleveland on August 31, 2018.
