Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported on Friday that the San Francisco 49ers had looked into trading fourth-year cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon this past week.
"At one point during the week, the 49ers were looking into trading Witherspoon, and Witherspoon was aware of this," wrote Barrows. "For one reason or another, that plan was scrapped."
General manager John Lynch, while speaking with reporters via a conference call on Sunday, denied that such discussions ever took place.
"Well, it's not true," Lynch said. "... We never had that conversation. Matt (Maiocco, who asked about it), you know it; there's a lot of conversations with our scouting department. We field calls, we make calls, but that was one we never initiated a talk there.
"There's always people calling about certain things but we have no interest in moving on from Ahkello. We're really excited about his development, where he's at, and his opportunity to help our team. We're big fans. We were when we drafted him, and we remain big fans. That was never a discussion."
