Analytics site Pro Football Focus released its grades from Sunday's Week 1 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. The road-team Cardinals defeated the defending NFC champions 24-20.

It may be too early for fans to point out any bright spots from the loss at Levi's Stadium, but Pro Football Focus had no problem doing so.

Left tackle Trent Williams wasn't just the 49ers' best offensive player in the game; he was the highest-graded Niners player, period. In fact, Williams was the highest-graded player between both teams, edging out Cardinals defensive lineman Angelo Blackson's 85.0 overall grade.

That's not bad for a player who missed all of last season with Washington.

Williams earned an 88.6 overall grade, a run-blocking grade of 89.7, and a pass-blocking grade of 79.9 while proving to be a good offseason addition to the roster.

Pass rusher Nick Bosa's overall grade of 84.7 was best among 49ers defenders.

Below were the five highest-graded 49ers players on offense against the Cardinals.

  • Trent Williams, LT, 88.6
  • Jordan Reed, TE, 71.7
  • Raheem Mostert, RB, 69.0
  • Kyle Juszczyk, FB, 67.8
  • Laken Tomlinson, LG, 67.3

Below were the five highest-graded 49ers players on defense.

  • Nick Bosa, DE, 84.7
  • Dre Greenlaw, LB, 84.2
  • Javon Kinlaw, DT, 81.4
  • Fred Warner, LB, 77.5
  • Richard Sherman, CB, 68.8

Which 49ers owned Sunday's lowest grades on both sides of the football? That would be wide receiver Dante Pettis (49.7) on offense and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (44.9) on defense. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (52.9) and safety Jimmie Ward (46.5) also graded poorly during the loss.
