The injuries just keep piling up for the San Francisco 49ers.
Hot on the heels of news that San Francisco is placing cornerback Richard Sherman on short-term injured reserve due to a calf strain, The Athletic reports that cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is in the concussion protocol.
Richard Sherman isn't the only #49ers cornerback injured Sunday. Per a league source, Ahkello Witherspoon suffered a concussion and is in the concussion protocol. He will take over for Sherman when cleared.

Witherspoon made the tackle on Kenyan Drake's final carry at game's end. Presumably that's when the injury occurred. https://t.co/sUFtnZuAJR

Witherspoon is an option to replace Sherman and play opposite Emmanuel Moseley over the next three games. The earliest Sherman can return is on October 11 against the Miami Dolphins at Levi's Stadium.

The 49ers could have cornerback Jason Verrett available. He has been recovering from a hamstring injury and was among the team's inactive players against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
The 49ers plan to hold their first of three practices of the week this afternoon. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is scheduled to speak with reporters before that practice.
