The San Francisco 49ers have made their decision on kicker Robbie Gould. The team could have cut ties with the veteran, opting out of his deal and salary. Instead, the 49ers have signed Gould to a two-year, $7.25 million fully-guaranteed contract extension, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The move will keep the kicker with San Francisco through the 2022 season.

Gould, 38, is in his 16th NFL season and fourth with the 49ers. He has made 19-of-23 field-goal attempts this season with a long of 52 yards and connected on 36-of-38 extra points. Although, Gould missed his two attempts on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals. That wasn't enough to discourage the 49ers from ensuring the kicker returns next season.

"You've got to look at the body of work with Robbie, and Robbie's been unbelievable since's he's been here for us," Shanahan said after Saturday's rough outing. "He's had an unbelievable year this year. Yeah it was tough on those situations, and Robbie will be harder on himself than anyone, but no. He's played too much football in his career and he's played too much football for us to let one game decide who he is."

The new deal seemingly reduces Gould's average salary per season from $4.75 million to $3.625 million but is now fully guaranteed.

This season, Gould became one of 11 players to kick 400-or-more field goals over their careers.
