ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to break the blockbuster trade news between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. The Niners surrendered their first-rounders in each of the next three drafts, plus a third-rounder next year, to move up from No. 12 overall to No. 3.
This wasn't a deal that came out of nowhere. Schefter also reports that the 49ers have been attempting to trade into the top five for several weeks. General manager John Lynch and his staff didn't just speak with Miami. They also had discussions with the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4, and the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 5.
The 49ers opted to move up as high as possible, presumably to select a quarterback of the future.
San Francisco didn't discuss a trade with the New York Jets, though. They own the No. 2 overall pick, and their new head coach is Robert Saleh, the 49ers' former defensive coordinator. They are expected to select quarterback Zach Wilson of BYU after the Jacksonville Jaguars draft Trevor Lawrence of Clemson with the No. 1 overall pick.
49ers have been attempting to move into top five picks for several weeks now, per sources. They discussed trading up with Dolphins at 3, Falcons at 4, Bengals at 5 and ultimately decided to go as high as they could, per sources. There were no trade-up talks with the Jets at 2.
