The San Francisco 49ers were the first team on the scoreboard at Ford Field after rookie quarterback Trey Lance tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield in the first quarter. The scoring drive that twice featured Lance coming In for veteran Jimmy Garoppolo resulted in the 49ers taking an early 7-0 lead over the home-team Detroit Lions.

You can watch Lance's touchdown pass below.

The touchdown was Sherfield's second of his career, with the first coming in 2018. Lance became the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to throw a touchdown pass in a season opener.

After trading up to that spot a month earlier, the 49ers made Lance the No. 3 overall draft pick in April.

Earlier in the same drive, Garoppolo had this nice 23-yard pass to All-Pro tight end George Kittle.
