Today, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters via a conference call. His team is coming off a 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and fell to 2-2 on the season. Shanahan provided several injury updates from the game.

The most discussed injury was to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who could not start the second half, giving way to rookie Trey Lance.

Shanahan said Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. However, the coach believes there is still a chance that Garoppolo will be available for this weekend's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Shanahan also provided the following other injury updates.

  • Kicker Robbie Gould will miss some time due to a strained groin. Injured reserve is an option. The coach estimates his kicker could be out three to five weeks.
  • Tackle Trent Williams is day-to-day with a shoulder injury.
  • Defensive end Samson Ebukam is dealing with some hamstring soreness.
  • Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is day-to-day due to his knee injury.
  • Tight end George Kittle is day-to-day with calf soreness.

Shanahan felt the injury news for Williams was good, considering how bad it seemed on Sunday.

"That was probably some of the best news we got, considering what we were worried about initially," Shanahan said. "There is some fluid in there and stuff, so there are some issues with it, but that's stuff that, hopefully, he can recover here before Sunday."

Shanahan added that running back Elijah Mitchell should be able to practice on Wednesday without the blue no-contact jersey. The rookie is dealing with a shoulder injury suffered during Week 2.

"That would be huge to get him back," Shanahan said, "and, hopefully, he'll be feeling better this week. It will be nice to see him get some reps without the blue jersey on."
