San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this morning and provided several injury updates as the team prepares for its Week 8 matchup against the Chicago Bears.
Trent Williams hasn't practiced this week, but the coach hopes his veteran offensive tackle will suit up on Sunday.
"Yeah, there is a chance [he plays]," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show. "Yeah, he hasn't been able to go here in a couple of weeks, but I'm hoping that he'll be able to practice here today. This has been the big test, to get him to Friday.
"As always, when I talk to you guys, those guys get into the training room right about now, so they're going to work on those guys the next couple of hours and hope to get them out to practice. If they're out to practice, it gives them more of a chance to play.
"So, we're looking at Trent. We've got a couple of guys in the concussion protocol with Azeez [Al-Shaair] and Dee Ford, so that's day-to-day, trying to find out that stuff. They've got to pass a couple of tests. Hopefully, we have some good luck today or better luck, and we get a few of those guys for the game."
Shanahan added that he should know more about those players by Saturday, possibly even by the end of today.
Trey Lance returned to practice this week after suffering a knee sprain during Week 5. Shanahan sounded optimistic about his rookie quarterback being available.
"Yeah, I think he will be," Shanahan said. "Again, that's going to be how he is today. Wednesday, we kept him pretty limited. We put him out there for about half the stuff, and the biggest thing was how he reacted the next day. He came in Thursday morning and didn't have soreness, which is a really good sign, but Thursday, we did a lot more and pushed him a lot harder.
"So, the big thing will be how he comes in this morning and how he reacted. If he has no setbacks, and his body was able to handle it, then he'll be healthy for the game, and we should be able to dress him."
If Lance is suited up, can we expect Shanahan to sprinkle his rookie quarterback into the offensive game plan here and there?
"Every time Trey's in uniform, there's packages for him," Shanahan said. "So, depending on how the game's going, whether we think it's effective for us, what we're going against, it's always an option to use. I'm not going to let [everyone] know how much we plan on doing that, but the key is getting him in uniform on Sunday, and that's what he's trying to prove to us this week, that he's healthy enough to do that, coming off his injury.
"If he is in uniform, being the No. 2 quarterback out there, it is different because, like I've always said, I'll always have a package in for him, if he's up, and the game kind of dictates how we use it or not."
Shanahan noted that he is waiting to hear about defensive end Samson Ebukam's status.
"In special teams practice yesterday, he got stepped on and rolled his ankle pretty good and had some things happen to it," Shanahan said. "He went and got an MRI yesterday. There's a few issues on it but it's something that still he has a chance to play, but it's going to be how he reacts today and how he reacts tomorrow. He's going to be getting treatment around the clock, and hopefully, that will heal good enough in the next couple of days because we're going to need him on Sunday also."
