The 49ers traded up to acquire the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and with it selected QB Trey Lance. Throughout the draft process, many experts and analysts thought Mac Jones from Alabama would be the pick. Now, Lance has had one career start and Mac Jones is the full-time starter in New England who seems to be improving by the week.
49ers Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Montana joined College Football Live this past weekend and echoed that he would have drafted Mac Jones instead of Trey Lance.
Joe Montana on College Football Live: "I would have taken Mac if I was the 49ers… I think it's funny, Alabama reminds me of the old USC the way they are producing quarterbacks"
More high praise and more recruiting material for @AlabamaFTBL
Montana showed high praise for Mac Jones, but Lance has seen limited work on the field this season and his opportunity still awaits.
The debate over Lance versus Jones will only heighten as their respective careers progress. Only time will tell.
