When he sat down to speak with reporters at the San Francisco 49ers' end-of-season press conference, John Lynch had not yet heard the rumor started by Boomer Esiason that the general manager was contemplating returning to the broadcast booth.
Lynch laughed when he heard about the rumor and offered a response.
"I have not heard that rumor," Lynch admitted. "From time to time, opportunities are presented, and I can tell you, and tell everyone that my commitment right now is to this organization. We're just coming off a season, but my commitment is to the 49ers, the York family, to Kyle (Shanahan).
"Standing up in front of that team yesterday, and just getting an opportunity to reflect on what we have, and I do think we have something special. And we're here to win championships, and we fell short of that. But I think both things can be true. That's our standard but also the amount of pride."
John Lynch took over as the 49ers' general manager in 2017. He and head coach Kyle Shanahan rebuilt the talent-deprived roster, reached the Super Bowl in 2019, and then the NFC Championship Game this past season. It's clear that both remain committed to bringing a sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy to the 49ers organization.
Lynch added, "I feel like it's a real blessing to be part of this organization, so my commitment is right here, and that's where I'll be."
