The San Francisco 49ers made a significant move on Friday, reportedly hiring Anthony Lynn as the assistant head coach on Kyle Shanahan's staff. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
Anthony Lynn is being hired as the Assistant Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers, per league sources. Lynn - who had other NFL and college offers - is expected to now be a key cog in the 49ers' offense and run game.
The move comes after this week's report that 49ers' former assistant head coach and tight ends coach, Jon Embree, would not return to the team. Also, offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel had a second interview for the Miami Dolphins' head coach vacancy on Friday. He is considered a frontrunner for the job.
Lynn is well-known and respected around the league. He spent last season as Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell's offensive coordinator. Before that, he spent four seasons (2017-20) as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, where he had a record of 33-31 and was 1-1 in the postseason.
Lynch also served as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills and various roles with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Denver Broncos since joining the NFL coaching ranks in 2000.
Lynn played running back in the NFL for eight seasons and even spent two seasons (1995-96) with the 49ers.
