Jon Embree will serve as new Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel's assistant head coach and tight ends coach. It sounds like he won't be the only former San Francisco 49ers coach joining McDaniel's staff.
Outkick writer Armando Salguero is hearing that the 49ers' wide receivers coach, Wes Welker, is headed to the Dolphins to serve in the same role.
I'm told Wes Welker will be joining Mike McDaniel staff with the #Dolphins as their WR coach. A return to South Florida after he played for the Dolphins in the mid 2000s.
Welker, 40, has served as Kyle Shanahan's receivers coach since 2019. Before that, he was an offensive assistant and special teams assistant with the Houston Texans (2017-18).
Welker is best known for his playing days as a receiver with the San Diego Chargers, Dolphins, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, and St. Louis Rams. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro (2009, 2011), five-time Pro Bowl selection (2008-12), and led the NFL in receptions three times (2007, 2009, 2011) over his career.
"I really enjoy being around him and picking his brain," wide receiver Jauan Jennings wrote for 49ers.com in 2020. "I feel super lucky to be able to learn from one of the best to do it."
Another 49ers player who flourished under Welker is wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who had 1,770 all-purpose yards and 14 total touchdowns in 2021.
The Chargers signed Welker (5-9, 185) as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in 2004. He caught 903 passes for 9,924 yards with 50 touchdowns through his 12 NFL seasons.
