According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the University of Kentucky is hiring San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to serve as the football program's offensive coordinator.
The University of Kentucky is hiring #49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello as its new offensive coordinator, per sources.
A widely respected QB developer, Scangarello replaces Liam Coen, who took the #Rams OC job and left behind the zone scheme Scangarello knows well.
Scangarello had two stints with the 49ers, serving as the quarterbacks coach from 2017-18, and then again in 2021. Between those two stints, he served as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator in 2019 and was a senior offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020.
Before initially joining head coach Kyle Shanahan's 49ers staff in 2017, Scangarello spent time as an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders. He also served several roles with collegiate programs.
A change at quarterback is likely in the works for the 49ers. The team is widely expected to part ways with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, transitioning to last year's No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance.
