The Pittsburgh Steelers? The Washington Commanders? Maybe even the Denver Broncos? Everyone has their theories of where the San Francisco 49ers will trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. However, this past week at the NFL Scouting Combine, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler heard what he describes as a "wild" rumor involving another potential destination.

The New Orleans Saints.

Most expect the 49ers to trade their quarterback of the last four-and-a-half seasons, ushering in the Trey Lance era in Santa Clara. The former No. 3 overall pick backed up Garoppolo all of last season, and the plan has always been for him to sit, learn, and take over when ready.

That leaves Garoppolo and his roughly $25 million salary expendable. In fact, the team may need to clear out that money to retain its own players and upgrade at other positions. Doing so while holding onto Garoppolo would be highly challenging.

"The wildest rumor I heard this week?" Fowler wrote in a feature for ESPN (h/t Andrew Holleran of The Spun). "Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo potentially pairing with New Orleans. This would be a surprise since many around the league expect Jameis Winston to return to the Saints. But if Rodgers and Wilson aren't moved, Garoppolo becomes one of the top options available. Maybe New Orleans at least kicks this idea around."

The 49ers could find themselves in a seller's market if Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson remain with their respective teams. That would likely generate increased interest in Garoppolo. However, one complication emerged last week when it was revealed that the 49ers quarterback would undergo shoulder surgery. He won't be able to throw during his estimated 16 weeks of recovery.

While some expect that news to impact Garoppolo's trade value, others feel that the lack of better quarterback options, and a down year for the incoming rookie quarterback class, means a deal could still be struck. It's just a matter of timing.
