The San Francisco 49ers hosted free agent defensive end Kemoko Turay on a free agent visit Wednesday, according to the league's transaction report.
Turay (6-5, 252) joined the NFL in 2018 as a second-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts. He struggled with injuries at times during his four seasons with the Colts, playing in just 38 total games with three starts. Turay played in a career-high 14 games as a rookie in 2018 and totaled 15 tackles, four sacks and 13 quarterback hits before seeing his 2019 season come to an early end due to a broken ankle. He wasn't quite able to regain his form in 2020 and underwent ankle surgery after the 2020 season before rebounding in 2021 with nine tackles, 5.5 sacks and eight quarterback hits in 13 games.
A native of Ivory Coast, Turay attended college at Rutgers University, where he signed after playing just two years of high school football. He totaled 103 tackles for the Scarlet Knights with 15.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss in 44 games. Turay was named a member of the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team in 2014 and was invited to the Senior Bowl in 2018 after totaling 65 tackles and four sacks as a senior. He was clocked at 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.
The 26-year-old Turay also visited the Atlanta Falcons in late March. Adding Turay would provide extra depth and speed on the edge for the 49ers.
