49ers weren’t “biting” on Jets’ offer for Deebo Samuel

The San Francisco 49ers didn't end up trading Deebo Samuel, and the wide receiver remains with the team that drafted him in 2019. Now, the two sides try to push forward, mend their relationship, and agree to a contract extension for the star player.

As the Jets were on the clock at No. 10, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that was the selection that New York offered to San Francisco.

"My understanding is that this was the pick they offered in a package for Deebo Samuel," Rapoport said on-air with the Jets' time to make their selection ticking down. "It was the No. 10 overall selection and then a pick swap later. That trade obviously did not materialize by tonight."

On Friday morning, Rapoport's colleague, Mike Giardi, reiterated what the NFL insider said the night earlier, noting that there may have actually been multiple pick swaps in play. San Francisco "wasn't biting." Samuel is too valuable to head coach Kyle Shanahan, and the offer wasn't enough to blow them away.

San Francisco now has a good template for a contract extension with Samuel after the Tennessee Titans traded wide receiver A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles. The latter reportedly finalized a four-year, $100 million deal with $57 million guaranteed for the young player. Brown and Samuel were part of the same draft class, and the same agent represents both.

The second round of the NFL Draft kicks off tonight. For now, the 49ers' first draft selection is in the upcoming round at No. 61 overall.
