Maybe the San Francisco 49ers should start considering a backup plan at center. Retirement remains a possibility for their veteran center, Alex Mack. The team would like to see him return for his 14th NFL season, and second with the 49ers, but each time they speak on the topic, team decision-makers sound less and less optimistic that will happen.
On Friday night, general manager John Lynch revealed that Mack has not yet arrived at a final decision on his immediate future.
"We've been in contact with Alex and had another discussion with him in the last couple of days," Lynch told reporters. "I will still describe that as fluid. We've collected all the information we needed to collect coming into this draft."
Could that mean the 49ers seek to add a center on Saturday? San Francisco has not selected an offensive lineman yet. Instead, they used their first three draft picks on a pass rusher, running back, and wide receiver. However, the team does currently have six selections remaining.
The 49ers signed Mack to a three-year deal on March 18, 2021. The seven-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman is 36 years old.
