The San Francisco 49ers continued their patient process on Saturday, electing to stay put in the fifth round, taking defensive back Samuel Womack out of Toledo at pick No. 172.

After taking an offensive lineman in UTSA's Spencer Burford with their fourth-round selection at pick No. 134, the 49ers opted to go with Womack, furthering their defensive talent by shoring up the need for a nickelback.

On Day 2 of the draft, the 49ers focused on the best player available, selecting USC edge rusher Drake Jackson at pick No. 61, LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price at No. 93, and SMU wide receiver Danny Gray over the likes of an interior offensive lineman, safety, or cornerback.

With Womack, the 49ers finally address the defensive back position, and get a 5'10, 190-pound player who possesses elite speed and 31 7/8 inch arms, running a 4.39 40-yard dash, as well as good ball skills, defending 17 passes in 2021, which led the entirety of the FBS last season, in addition to two interceptions, which led Toledo.

Womack can possess safety versatility in the NFL with his speed and coverage ability, and is a good fit with his athleticism, which the 49ers value in the secondary with their rotations.

While Womack wasn't as known of a quantity, given that he played at Toledo, it's an interesting flyer on a nickelback, who will look to compete with Deommodore Lenoir, drafted in the fifth round last year, and veteran Darqueze Dennard.

Currently, the 49ers have newly-acquired cornerback Charvarius Ward, Emmanuel Moseley, Ambry Thomas, Dontae Johnson, Lenoir, and Dennard in their cornerback room, and add some necessary speed with the ability of Womack.

Most importantly, Womack and his speed could add to the special-teams depth that the 49ers have worked hard to secure this past offseason.

Following their selection of Womack, the 49ers still have three sixth-round picks(No. 187, No. 220, No.221), as well as a seventh-round pick(No. 262) to fill out their roster.
