Sportico released its NFL valuations for the 2022 season, ranking every team and their current monetary value, and the San Francisco 49ers came in as the fifth-most valuable franchise, having a $5.18 billion valuation in the current year.
The valuation marks a 21% increase from the 49ers' 2021 number, when the franchise was valued at $4.27 billion, which was also the fifth-highest valuation in the NFL at the time.
With its $5.18 billion valuation, the 49ers rank behind the Dallas Cowboys, who are the most valuable franchise across all sports at $7.64 billion, the Los Angeles Rams, who stand at $5.91 billion, the New England Patriots, who stand at $5.88 billion, and the New York Giants, who stand at $5.73 billion.
ESPN's Todd Archer shared insight into how Sportico arrives at its calculations, as well as the steady increase in valuation year-by-year.
"Sportico's calculations are derived from interviews with more than 30 bankers, lawyers, team executives, owners and consultants as well as public documents involved in the sport. The average NFL franchise is worth $4.1 billion, up 18% over last year."
According to Archer, NFL franchises are at a premium, as there are over double the number of franchises worth $4 billion in the league compared to every other major sports franchise combined.
"Sixteen NFL franchises have been valued at least $4 billion, compared to seven in the other U.S. sports leagues, including four in the NBA and three in MLB."
The 49ers' valuation increased by 21% from 2021 to 2022, marking an increase from the 17.6% increase that the franchise saw in valuation from 2020 to 2021.
