Running back Trey Sermon made the San Francisco 49ers' 53-man roster on Tuesday. Now, a day later, he is off the team. The Niners waived the running back, likely to make room for guard Blake Hance, who San Francisco claimed off waivers today.
ESPN's Field Yates was the first to report that the 49ers have waived Sermon. The move was also listed on the NFL transaction wire.
September 1 Update: The Philadelphia Eagles claimed Sermon off waivers. The running back won't be joining the 49ers' practice squad, as general manager John Lynch hoped.
San Francisco made Sermon (6-0, 215) a third-round selection (No. 88 overall) out of Ohio State in 2021. The 49ers traded two fourth-round picks (Nos. 117 and 121) in that draft to the Los Angeles Rams to move up to select the running back.
Sermon carried the football 41 times for 167 yards and a rushing touchdown while adding three receptions for 26 yards through nine game appearances (two starts) with the 49ers last season.
The NIners' remaining running backs are Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson, and rookies Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason.
