Yesterday, the San Francisco 49ers created a roster spot by releasing running back Tevin Coleman. They have filled that roster spot by activating cornerback Jason Verrett off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
The team also signed Coleman to the practice squad. He has rushed for 26 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries this season while adding three receptions for 44 yards and a receiving touchdown.
San Francisco opened Verrett's 21-day practice window on October 5, giving the team until today to activate the corner. Failing to do so would have ended hopes of his return this season.
Verrett is returning from the ACL injury sustained during Week 1 last season. The 49ers initially signed Verrett in 2019. His healthiest season with the team came in 2020 when he was arguably San Francisco's best cornerback, recording 60 tackles, seven passes defensed, and two interceptions through 13 games.
"He looked better last week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Verrett on Monday. "He got more reps last week and took a step in the right direction."
Verrett had a minor setback two weeks ago, experiencing some soreness in his knee. The 49ers rested him to ensure the situation didn't get worse.
San Francisco lost starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to a season-ending ACL injury during its Week 5 contest against the Carolina Panthers.
