The San Francisco 49ers activated cornerback Jason Verrett off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before Wednesday's practice. However, that doesn't necessarily mean fans will see the veteran defender this weekend on the artificial turf of SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams.
Verrett is returning from the ACL injury he suffered during Week 1 last season, and it may be best to delay his return to the football field until after the bye week when the 49ers host the Los Angeles Chargers on the grass field of Levi's Stadium.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has not ruled Verrett out for Sunday's game, though. The cornerback will be limited during Wednesday's practice, hopefully ramping up his workload through the week.
"Keep doing the same things we've done," Shanahan told reporters when asked how the team plans to handle Verrett's return. "We'll throw him in practice and just see how it goes. ... I'm not ruling out this week. Really, just waiting to see how he practices and then go from there.
One player who will not practice is wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who emerged from Sunday's loss against the Kansas City Chiefs with a hamstring injury. However, the coach did note that his star wide receiver is "making progress" with the injury.
Shanahan added that defensive linemen Arik Armstead (foot, ankle) and Samson Ebukam (Achilles), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (calf), wide receiver Jauan Jennings (hamstring), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (finger), and Tackle Trent Williams (vet day) are not expected to practice. The 49ers will release their official practice participation report after the session.
