Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in September and underwent two surgeries. He expects to be full-go in time for organized team activities (OTAs) in May. However, that doesn't mean the third-year quarterback is waiting to start getting into football shape.
It sounds like Lance has started throwing again in the Bay Area. The quarterback took to social media to ask for "a few college receivers" for (presumably) a Bay Area throwing session, starting on Friday (h/t Grant Cohn of SI)
"Like truly taking drops, throwing," Lance said during the week leading to the Super Bowl. "But it's going to be a process. Ups and downs, and it has been, obviously, with the second procedure and everything like that. But I feel like I'm in a really great spot, and OTAs, I should be fully cleared."
Lance is the healthiest of the two 49ers quarterbacks currently under contract. Brock Purdy, who ended the 2022 season as the team's starter, sustained an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear in his right elbow during the NFC Championship Game. He is expected to miss the entire offseason after undergoing surgery to repair the damage. The procedure was initially scheduled for this week but got postponed due to inflammation in the quarterback's arm.
San Francisco's two other quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Josh Johnson, are slated to hit free agency.
