Day 5 of the San Francisco 49ers training camp is officially over, as head coach Kyle Shanahan conducted an intense, scrimmage-filled practice that involved both team drills and move-the-ball periods on the first day of padded practices.

The offense and defense each had their moments, with quarterback Trey Lance having his best practice, while the defense accumulated six sacks on the day.

What was the context behind Purdy, Lance, Darnold, and third-string quarterback Brandon Allen's days on Monday?

11-on-11s: 1st Period

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion in the ground. Seemed like he double-pumped and the ball slipped as he was in his throwing motion, but it was as the arm went down, hence the incomplete ruling.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold throws a deep incompletion to Deebo Samuel, with Qwuantrezz Knight breaking up the pass. It was a heavily contested ball down the left sideline that had a bit too much air under it. Essentially a 50-50 ball and a pass breakup occurred.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen completes a pass to the flat.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked, completing a pass afterward, but didn't count that throw.

Trey Lance (QB2)

  1. Trey Lance hits Danny Gray on a 15-yard in-breaking route that got 10 yards after the catch.

Brock Purdy(QB2)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked by Arik Armstead on his first dropback of the day.
  2. Brock Purdy completes a nice touch pass over the defense to Christian McCaffrey for 20-25 air yards and he takes it all the way for a touchdown. Fred Warner was in coverage, but McCaffrey had gained a healthy 2-3 yard separation, and Purdy hit him perfectly over the shoulder to continue his forward motion.
  3. Brock Purdy hits Elijah Mitchell on a screen pass.

Sam Darnold(QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold throws a checkdown.
  2. Sam Darnold is sacked on the play.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen's pass is batted down at the line of scrimmage for an incompletion.
  2. Brandon Allen throws an incompletion to Willie Snead, with Qwuantrezz Knight recording the pass-breakup.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws an incompletion to Charlie Woerner. Woerner was wide open on a 10-yard out-route, but Purdy threw this ball way short, as it hit the ground nearly three yards short of the intended target on a poor pass.
  2. Brock Purdy throws an interception to Dre Greenlaw on a deep pass intended for George Kittle. It was a poor pass and decision, as Greenlaw had great positioning on Kittle in traffic, and the ball had too much air underneath it.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance completes a short pass in a tight window to Troy Fumagalli.
  2. Trey Lance throws a checkdown pass.

11-on-11s: 2nd Period

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy throws a deep pass intended for Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk had beaten Deommodore Lenoir by a comfortable 2-3 yards, but Purdy underthrew the deep ball, and Lenoir committed a pass interference on the play as Aiyuk waited for the ball to land.

Sam Darnold (QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold throws an incompletion to Tay Martin on an intermediate pass that appeared to be a miscommunication. Darnold threw the ball behind the receiver 15 yards downfield, but Martin never looked back, running an in-breaking route with Terrence Mitchell in good coverage.
  2. Sam Darnold hits Ronnie Bell on a good throw and catch over the middle of the field.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy is sacked on the play. He was looking to throw, pump faked as he saw pressure, and hit Elijah Mitchell afterwards when the sack had already occurred.
  2. Brock Purdy hits Deebo Samuel on an 8-10 yard play to the left sideline, gaining 10 yards after the catch with Ambry Thomas in coverage.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance throws an incompletion to Jordan Mason, who wasn't looking at the ball down the left sideline in what seemed to be a miscommunication.
  2. Trey Lance completes a 20-yard downfield pass to Chris Conley near the right sideline. This was one of Lance's best balls of the day, as he threw with anticipation before Conley had even gotten out of his break, leading to a completion with room to spare near the sideline.

Sam Darnold(QB3)

  1. Sam Darnold hits Ronnie Bell on a 5-yard out, which gained 2-3 more yards after the play.
  2. Sam Darnold hits Ronnie Bell for a short pass on a play-action rollout to the right side.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy senses pressure on the outside, steps up in the pocket, and fires to Christian McCaffrey over the middle for a few yards. Good awareness from Purdy to step up and make the short throw.

Sam Darnold(QB2)

  1. Sam Darnold is sacked on a longer play. Didn't find anyone open on the play-action play, but took a long time holding onto the football, and could've gotten it out a little sooner.
  2. Sam Darnold hits Ray-Ray McCloud on a 20-yard strike on an in-breaking play. Great delivery from Darnold, hitting McCloud right in the hands on the intermediate pass.

Brandon Allen(QB3)

  1. Brandon Allen throws an incompletion on a pass that was batted down at the line of scrimmage.

Brock Purdy(QB1)

  1. Brock Purdy steps up in the pocket and hits Cameron Latu in the flat for a one-yard gain. Marcelino McCrary-Ball was in the vicinity for an immediate stop. Good awareness from Purdy to step up and make the throw again.
  2. Brock Purdy hits Deebo Samuel on a 10-yard out-route. Appeared to be a route from the slot, as Isaiah Oliver was the cornerback in coverage. Note: Samuel and Aiyuk have both seen some work out of the slot over the last two practices.

Trey Lance(QB2)

  1. Trey Lance is sacked on a play-action pass. Looked deep for Brandon Aiyuk and immediately sacked after the first read was taken away.
  2. Trey Lance hits Brandon Aiyuk on a short crosser over the middle for 5-7 yards with Terrence Mitchell in coverage.

Move-The-Ball Period

Brock Purdy(QB1)

1st & 10: Brock Purdy throws a completion on a short bootleg off play-action.
2nd & Medium: Brock Purdy throws a completion to Chris Conley for about 5-6 yards near the sideline, setting up 3rd & Short.
3rd & Short: Brock Purdy is sacked, as Clelin Ferrell hits his arm while he's throwing, forcing a fumble.

Trey Lance(QB2)

1st & 10: Jordan Mason rushes for a loss of 1 yard.
2nd & 11: Trey Lance hits Ray-Ray McCloud over the middle for a five-yard gain.
3rd & 6: Trey Lance hits Ray-Ray McCloud on a 15-20 yard in-breaking catch with tight coverage. McCloud was able to secure the ball for a nice catch, resulting in a first down.
1st & 10: Jordan Mason rushes for three yards.
2nd & 7: Trey Lance throws the ball away when facing pressure, with Jordan Mason as the closest receiver on the sideline. This could've been a potential sack.
3rd & 15: Simulating a 3rd & Long, Trey Lance fires a 13-yard completion to Tay Martin who ran a comeback route and made a nice catch, placing the 49ers in field goal range for Jake Moody.
4th & Short: Jake Moody drills a 52-yard field goal.

Sam Darnold(QB3)

1st down: Run play.
2nd down: Run play.
3rd & 5: Sam Darnold hits Danny Gray for a first down on a curl route near the sidelines.
1st & 10: Ronald Awatt rushes for five yards.
2nd & 5: Sam Darnold rushes for a few, escaping the pocket, although it could've been a sack as well.
4th & Short: Zane Gonzalez hits a 55-yard field goal that may have clunked off the posts.

Final Stats

Brock Purdy: 8/11, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 FUMB
Trey Lance: 8/10
Sam Darnold: 6/8
Brandon Allen: 1/4

Overall Grade

Trey Lance stacked multiple good practices en route to having his best training camp session yet, with his lone incompletions serving as a throwaway and a miscommunication. His variety of throws and consistency on Monday earned him an 'A', which was the best of any quarterback performance of the day.

Sam Darnold remained consistent, which has been his moniker this training camp, and didn't make any poor decisions. However, he didn't necessarily wow with his throws, but still earns a solid 'B' on the day.

Brock Purdy went through some ups and downs, having a poor start before finishing practice strong with eight straight completions, although he did fumble one play. Purdy's performance earned him a 'C' on the day, which he'll look to work off of tomorrow on Day 2 of pads.

Stay tuned for the next practice, Sunday, and the quarterback report that will ensue!
