The San Francisco 49ers are holding their third and final practice of the week, and quarterback Trey Lance is not on the field. Before practice, a report surfaced that the Niners had named Sam Darnold as their No. 2 quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy and that the team was looking into options for Lance.
That reportedly includes the possibility of trading the former No. 3 overall pick.

San Francisco is preparing for its preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. The two teams kick off from Levi's Stadium on Friday night. If Lance is not practicing today, it could mean fans won't see him on the field for the game.

While the 49ers have not released an official statement regarding the quarterback's absence, the timing might indicate that the team is unwilling to risk Lance's health if it intends to move the young player.
In 2021, San Francisco traded three first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 3 overall pick, which was used to select Lance. He has started just four games since.
Lance entered the 2022 season as the 49ers' starting quarterback but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during Week 2. He finished the season 15-of-31 for 194 yards and one interception.
