NFL exec on trade cost for 49ers’ Trey Lance: “He’s too talented to just give away”

It's possible Trey Lance remains a member of the San Francisco 49ers this season. The former No. 3 overall pick's value has never been lower. He just lost the backup quarterback job to Sam Darnold.

Still, some NFL insiders, like Tom Pelissero, believe NFL teams are doing their due diligence, reviewing their pre-draft evaluations of Lance, given recent developments in Santa Clara. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have both said they hope Lance remains on the roster but haven't slammed the door closed on the possibility of a trade.

Jordan Schultz has spoken to several NFL executives about Lance's current trade value. He's being told that a "Day 3 pick is probably about right," but wouldn't be surprised if something more enticing was offered.

"One assistant GM noted he wasn't convinced the 49ers pull the trigger unless they received more," Schultz tweeted.

The executive said of Lance: "He's too talented to just give away."

During a radio interview this morning, Lynch was asked if he envisions Lance being on the 49ers' roster when the team opens its season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10.

"I think that's the most likely option," Lynch responded. "As I said, we're very happy with Trey. That's probably the most likely option, is that he's here. If we could find a landing spot for Trey, that is a really good one for him and works for our organization, that's not something we turn a blind eye to."

NFL teams must trim their rosters down to 53 players by Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT. Will Lance be among the quarterbacks to make the cut, or will the 49ers find a new home for the third-year player by then?
