The San Francisco 49ers are getting very thin when it comes to safety depth. On Sunday, they lost starter Talanoa Hufanga for the season due to a torn ACL. On Thursday, the team faced further adversity after safety and special-teams ace George Odum exited the game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Odum was injured in the second quarter during a special teams play that saw Seahawks running back DeeJay Dallas mishandle a kickoff catch. Several players scrambled for the loose football, and the 49ers safety got hurt on the play.
Later, the 49ers ruled Odum out for the remainder of the game due to a biceps injury. In his post-game press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed concerns that the injury will likely be season-ending.
"We'll look into him tomorrow, but most likely tore it," Shanahan told reporters. "It usually is season-ending, but you never know if he can have a chance to come back later. We'll have to look into that tomorrow."
Addressing the challenges posed by the potential absence of both Hufanga and Odum for the rest of the season, and the possibility of making a roster move, Shanahan said, "Yeah, we're going to have to do something because we were having to do some stuff anyways as it was."
Shanahan praised Odum's impact this season, adding, "To lose George, he's been unbelievable. He's been one of the best special teams players in the league here, and he's a very good safety for us, too. So we've been thin there with the depth, and losing him is a big deal. We'll have to see what our options are here, though, when we get in."
