San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey exited Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders due to a calf injury. Fortunately, he has avoided a more serious setback, as head coach Kyle Shanahan announced this week that it was a "mild calf strain," an injury that should not result in the running back missing time beyond this weekend's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams.

McCaffrey spoke to reporters ahead of Wednesday's practice, offering a positive update on his injury.

"I've played through worse," McCaffrey said. "It's just one of those things where, right now, in the situation we're in, precaution is probably better. But definitely, I knew I was going to be good regardless of what the test said, so it's more of a cautionary situation, being smart about it, than doing something stupid."

McCaffrey has had an outstanding season, leading the 49ers' rushing attack with a league-high 1,459 yards on the ground. He also boasts an NFL-leading 2,023 scrimmage yards, surpassing the 2,000-yard mark for the second time in his career.

The 49ers will allow McCaffrey to rest up for the playoffs. The team has already secured the NFC's No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the playoffs. This means the 49ers won't have to leave the Pacific Time Zone for the remainder of the season, even if they reach Super Bowl 58, which will be played in Las Vegas.
