The move comes after the 49ers placed cornerback Jason Verrett on injured reserve due to a torn rotator cuff.
"Losing one of our veterans, we're allowed six veterans on the practice squad, and we like those veterans to be guys who can help us in a pinch," head coach Kyle Shanahan explained on Tuesday when asked about the workout. "So losing JV was tough, so we at least got to get another corner in, and we wanted to take a look at some vets since that spot opened up."
Hayward hasn't played in a game since October 16, 2022, when he suffered a shoulder injury with the Atlanta Falcons, leading to his placement on injured reserve two days later. The Falcons released him on April 21, 2023.
Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round from Vanderbilt in 2012, Hayward has appeared in 152 games with 118 starts over his career. His stat line in those games includes 448 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 25 interceptions, 112 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
In addition to the Falcons and Packers, Hayward has also played for the Los Angeles Chargers (2016-20) and the Las Vegas Raiders (2021). During his career, he earned two Pro Bowl selections (2016-17) and two second-team All-Pro nods (2016-17).
