The secret to 49ers’ success: Egoless locker room

Safety Tashaun Gipson's journey with the San Francisco 49ers began in 2022. He flirted with the idea of retirement after one season. However, when the team showed interest in bringing him back, he deferred his post-football plans to continue playing.

Now, Gipson finds himself in the Super Bowl, aiming to add a championship to his resume. The defender was among several players who spoke to reporters on Tuesday at the team's hotel, the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa. When asked about the unique atmosphere of this locker room compared to his experiences with four other teams, he emphasized the sense of brotherhood.

"The brotherhood is the biggest thing," Gipson declared. "When you walk into this locker room, everybody treats each other like it's family."

Recalling a heartfelt moment with then-49ers linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair just two weeks after his arrival, Gipson felt embraced by the brotherhood from the outset. He never felt like an outsider.

"That's why this team is good," Gipson explained, "because it's just like anything—[when] you have love for somebody, you care about somebody, you don't want to let them down, and you're playing for them. And I think that's what makes this team so special because there are no egos. Nobody cares about who's getting a glorification. It's all about a brotherhood and seeing your brother shine.

"And I think that's probably just the biggest thing that I can say. Everybody got love for each other, and it's hard to do that in the National Football League. A lot of egos; everybody wants to be at the top. But I can say, in this locker room, it's just so different."

One player who epitomizes that team mentality is quarterback Brock Purdy, who never seeks recognition. Everything he does is for the good of the team as a whole. He may be an MVP finalist and the franchise record holder for the most single-season passing yards, but no one inside the locker room doubts that the second-year quarterback is more focused on winning week in and week out.

"Brock is so cool," Gipson shared. "He's not about himself. He's a team guy. And it's just that, and it trickles all the way down to the [S] George Odums, and myself, and things like that. We all just [have] a camaraderie that I just can't explain, and I'm glad to be a part of [it]."
