According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers hosted former Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson on a pre-draft visit this week.
Wilson registered 41 receptions for 617 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games as a senior in 2023, per Sports Reference. His best statistical season came in 2022 when he hauled in 43 passes for 897 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Throughout his collegiate career, Wilson caught 102 passes for 1,757 yards with eight touchdowns over four seasons. He spent his first two seasons with Arizona State before transferring to Florida State in 2022.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6'6 3/8" and 231-pound Wilson posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.52 seconds, a vertical jump of 37 inches, a broad jump of 10 feet, 8 inches, and a 20-yard shuttle time of 4.11 seconds.
Maiocco speculated, "Thinking out loud here, but wondering if some teams might want to see what he could do at tight end."
NFL.com projects Wilson to be a fourth or fifth-round draft pick.
"An enormous target with an elite catch radius, Wilson is still in the process of learning to play to his traits," Lance Zierlein wrote in his NFL.com scouting report. "He is fairly physical against press but plodding feet limit his release quickness and ability to separate out of breaks. He flashes impressive catches here and there but generally fails to impose his frame and strength on defenders, leading to a disappointing contested-catch rate for such a big man.
"In general, Wilson's body control and ball skills might not be good enough to stick at wide receiver. He could end up trying to make a team as an F tight end with enough developmental traits to warrant an extended look."
