Several quarterbacks have secured massive contract extensions this offseason, including Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars and, most recently, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers. Some predict that when the San Francisco 49ers pay quarterback Brock Purdy next year, it could be a deal exceeding $60 million annually.
When asked about his looming contract, Purdy sent a clear message: his focus is on 2024, not what might happen next year.
"That's great. I'm happy for those guys," Purdy told Omar Ruiz during an interview on NFL Network. "But for me and this team right now, we got to focus on 2024. This season is so long, and there's so much stuff that you go through. So to get caught up in what the years can look like down the road or anything like that, to me, that's pretty nonsense.
"So, focusing one day at a time. I have to get better for this team, and we all do here. So, that's where my focus is at, and all of our focus is at."
This week, Purdy spoke with Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, explaining his evolving mindset and the push to ensure the 49ers dominate for four quarters each game. While San Francisco is the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl once again, Purdy doesn't care about the odds.
"Screw the expectations. It's football," Purdy told Silver. "And for four quarters, man, we've gotta have that bloody mindset of going and taking it. Every down, every series, every rep."
Speaking to Ruiz, Purdy elaborated on his "bloody mindset" comment.
"Just having that chip on our shoulder," Purdy said. "It's football. Every Sunday, you're going to get everybody's best shot, and nothing's ever given to us. It doesn't matter what you did last year, the years before. Every Sunday we have to go into it like we have to go and take it.
"And so, for me and myself, I never want to be complacent with we had this kind of season last year, the year before. It's always a new season, and everybody's coming back healthier and stronger, and you got to go take it every Sunday.
"And so, for me as a quarterback, it's staying on the field, converting on third downs, being smart, checking the ball down, not turning the ball over. And in that sense, that's what I meant by being dominant and having that bloody mindset of going and taking it."
"For us, it's all about finishing and executing when the moments are big." @brockpurdy13 shares how the @49ers have learned to push past barriers heading into next season. 🔊
