Quick notes

Sunday's practice was shorter and lighter, with players going through the session without pads. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is currently not practicing due to a contract dispute but is usually seen observing, was absent from the Sunday session.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel took his first day off of training camp after participating in the previous nine sessions.

Running back Christian McCaffrey participated in individual drills but did not join the team drills. With Elijah Mitchell sidelined, Jordan Mason saw a significantly heavier workload.

Linebacker Curtis Robinson returned to practice but did not participate in team drills.

Rookie offensive lineman Dominick Puni continues to benefit from the increased reps at right guard and appears to be having a strong camp.

Brock Purdy had a strong outing, completing 12 of 14 passes without any interceptions. The incompletions were targeted at Mason and wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Despite his earlier camp interceptions making headlines, the quarterback offered his perspective on the practice errors.

"I take pride in protecting the ball for our offense and our team, so obviously, I'm mad when I'm not completing the ball to our guys, and it's going to the defense," Purdy admitted after practice. "And I'm hard on myself, and the coaches are, too. We have a standard here, so it's not like we're just going out, and just because it's practice, it's okay to throw picks. No, there's still a standard here.

"But with that, I know you guys have heard me say this all over the media: now's the time to be trying out some stuff in terms of throwing [in] some windows and some tight coverages and whatnot. But I still gotta grow. I still gotta be better, and I'm hard on myself with it, but now's the time to do it."

According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Purdy made a nice completion to Jennings during the move-the-ball period, hitting the receiver in stride for a gain of about 20 yards.

According to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area, tight end George Kittle's father, Bruce, was present for Sunday's practice. He witnessed his son catch all three passes thrown by Purdy. After practice, Kittle gathered the tight ends to work on blocking scenarios.

Wagoner reported that the 49ers experimented at various starting positions on defense, giving cornerbacks Renardo Green (nickel) and Rock Ya-Sin (outside) and linebackers Dee Winters (WILL) and Jalen Graham (SAM) reps with the first team.

Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made a nice catch over the middle on a pass from quarterback Brandon Allen. Second-year wideout Ronnie Bell appears to be progressing.

"Bell has shown a knack for making some contested catches and had a couple more today, including one where he held on to a pass from Josh Dobbs despite tight coverage from Ya-Sin," Wagoner wrote.

Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group reported that Purdy and Bell connected on a play where the quarterback reversed field and hit the wideout for a 10-yard gain despite tight coverage from linebacker Fred Warner.

Wagoner noted that Pearsall, Bell, and wide receiver Trent Taylor took reps as the primary punt returners.

Injury updates

Danny Gray landed awkwardly on his right shoulder after attempting to catch a deep pass from quarterback Josh Dobbs while going against cornerback Ambry Thomas. According to Inman, the receiver appeared to be in pain.
