Quick notes

Running back Matt Breida participated in his first practice since rejoining the 49ers, wearing jersey No. 28. Cornerback Isaac Yiadom now wears his old jersey number, 22.

Offensive lineman Ben Bartch and wide receivers Jacob Cowing (hamstring) and Tay Martin (hamstring) returned to practice.

"Cowing was seen fielding kickoffs from the JUGS machine as well as on the field with the second and third teams," noted Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area. "The fourth-round pick caught passes from both backup quarterbacks Brandon Allen and Josh Dobbs in his return."

With Kyle Juszczyk getting a rest day, tight end Jake Tonges took some snaps at fullback.

According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, it was a "mostly strong" day for quarterback Brock Purdy, who completed 6 of 7 passes and threw three touchdowns.

"The best throw of the day (and probably camp) was a perfectly thrown 50-yard touchdown to Ricky Pearsall on Purdy's first attempt in team drills," Wagoner wrote. "Pearsall got loose behind S George Odum and CB Deommodore Lenoir and Purdy hit him in stride for the score. Purdy also hit Jauan Jennings and RB Jordan Mason for touchdowns in red zone work. The throw to Jennings was dropped in the ideal spot in the back corner of the end zone. Mason lined up in the slot and scored on a quick out against an apparently confused defense."

Purdy's performance during team drills would have been flawless had it not been for an interception by cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, who has been having a strong camp. Lenoir intercepted an off-target pass intended for wide receiver Chris Conley. Purdy struggled during the move-the-ball session, missing all four pass attempts.

Wagoner reported that Allen finished 8 of 10 and Dobbs finished 6 of 7 in the competitive backup quarterback battle. "More important, both seem to be settling in and feeling comfortable ripping it downfield a bit more," he added.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel continues to have a strong camp and looks like one of the best offensive players on the practice field. Chan reports that wide receiver Deebo Samuel caught a pass from Allen and "trucked" cornerback Rock-Ya Sin. However, Sin made a play against Jauan Jennings, forcing the wide receiver to fumble and then recovering the ball.

Mason surprised Fred Warner with his effective blitz pickup. Cody Schrader also had a solid blitz pickup against linebacker Jalen Graham.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported that rookie cornerback Renardo Green had a "big day" with Yiadom sidelined with an ankle injury. Green played both nickel and outside cornerback with the first-team defense.

Defensive linemen Kevin Givens, Jordan Elliott, Kalia Davis, and T.Y. McGill recorded would-be sacks.

Injury updates

Wide receiver Danny Gray practiced in a blue no-contact jersey after landing hard on his shoulder on Sunday.

Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was pulled midway through practice.

"He tweaked his shoulder, something that he did in OTAs," Shanahan explained. "I don't know if it's too serious, but that's why we removed him halfway through practice."

Running backs Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and Isaac Guerendo (hamstring), linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, offensive lineman Spencer Burford (hand), and cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. were seen working on the side.

Running back Christian McCaffrey is dealing with a calf strain and will miss a couple of weeks, making him unlikely to play in the preseason.

San Francisco placed wide receiver Malik Turner on the injured reserve list.
